K-Beauty Comes to Alabama: Industry Expert Sungmin Lee Brings Seoul's Hottest Trends to Auburn

Seoul Style Arrives in Alabama

On August 21, 2026, Auburn University's Korea Center–King Sejong Institute hosted its third annual Sejong Culture Academy, bringing the vibrant world of Korean beauty directly to local students. This year, Auburn High School students participated in an exclusive, hands-on workshop led by Sungmin Lee, a renowned Korean beauty expert and industry veteran. The event offered a rare opportunity for American students to experience the global phenomenon of K-beauty firsthand, bridging the geographical gap between Alabama and Seoul. Through interactive demonstrations, the academy successfully introduced the intricate techniques and philosophies that define South Korea's famous beauty industry.

Meet the Mastermind Behind the Makeup

Guest instructor Sungmin Lee brought an impressive portfolio of professional experience to the Auburn community. As the former chief makeup and styling artist for Mnet, one of South Korea's leading music television networks, Lee has shaped the visual aesthetics of modern Korean pop culture. Her past clients include prominent figures such as Jinyoung from the popular K-pop group GOT7 and the acclaimed film director Park Chan-wook. By sharing her real-world expertise, Lee gave students an insider's look into the high-stakes styling world of Korean entertainment, elevating the workshop from a basic tutorial to a masterclass in professional artistry.

Skincare Secrets and Personal Color Analysis

The interactive curriculum covered several core aspects of Korean beauty culture, starting with the fundamental philosophy of skincare first. Students explored the history and evolution of Korean skincare routines, which prioritize hydration and skin health over heavy coverage. A major highlight of the workshop was personal color analysis, a viral global trend where individuals determine which specific color palettes best complement their natural skin tones. Lee conducted live demonstrations, showing students how to identify their ideal shades and apply practical makeup techniques used by top K-pop stars to enhance their natural features.

A Growing Tradition of Cultural Collaboration

This exciting workshop was made possible through a strong partnership between Auburn University's Korea Center–King Sejong Institute and Jennifer Beth, a teacher at Auburn High School. The Sejong Culture Academy has a rich history of introducing diverse Korean traditions to local youth. In 2024, the program brought energetic K-pop cultural programming to the school, followed by traditional Taekwondo classes in 2025. Sponsored globally by the South Korean government-backed King Sejong Institute, these initiatives aim to foster deep cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, connecting Alabama youth with global cultural movements.

Opening Doors to New Global Passions

Daniel Kim, the Cultural Program Specialist for Auburn's Korea Center-King Sejong Institute, emphasized the immense value of these unique educational experiences. He noted that learning from a world-class expert like Lee is a rare privilege that can inspire students to step out of their comfort zones and explore new career paths. As the King Sejong Institute continues to sponsor similar cultural academies worldwide in cities like Hanoi and Pune, local communities can look forward to more enriching international programs. Enrolling in these classes might just open the door to a lifelong passion for global culture.
