Korea Takes Modernized Hanbok to Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks

Hanbok Takes Center Stage at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks

Traditional Korean attire is making a historic leap onto the world's most prestigious fashion runways. Under the project name Contemporary Korean Heritage — Hanbok Collective, South Korea has launched an overseas showcase coinciding with the Milan and Paris fashion weeks running from September 22 to October 6, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism alongside the Korea Craft and Design Foundation, this initiative marks the first time modernized hanbok is being promoted through a dedicated business-to-business format during these major global fashion events. The campaign aims to establish these heritage-inspired designs as viable players in the highly competitive international luxury fashion market.

Understanding Hanbok and its Modern Evolution

For those new to Korean culture, the hanbok is the traditional attire of Korea, historically characterized by vibrant colors, simple lines, and elegant, flowing silhouettes. In recent years, South Korea has actively promoted Hanbok Saenghwal, which refers to the daily lifestyle of wearing hanbok. Designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in July 2022, the government is currently backing campaigns to have this living tradition inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list by 2030. This global showcase is part of a broader blueprint by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to foster traditional heritage as a high-value growth engine, aiming to expand the country's global K-Culture market to 300 trillion KRW.

Meet the Five Designers Redefining Korean Heritage

Five rising domestic Korean labels were selected through a rigorous screening process by industry, retail, and academic experts. Each brand reinterprets traditional aesthetics into contemporary, wearable streetstyle and eveningwear. LEESLE brings Korean heritage into modern streetstyle, while MOOROOTS focuses on relaxed, everyday silhouettes. ONDATA merges traditional construction with dramatic theatrical costume design for its Spring/Summer 2027 collection. SHEEN:SEOUL blends Western tailoring with iconic hanbok elements like daenim jogger pants and goreum bustiers. Finally, HAPPLY operates as a K-heritage studio, translating palace architecture and traditional check patterns into artistic, genderless attire.

A Highly Strategic Business-to-Business Showcase

Unlike standard cultural exhibitions, this initiative is unapologetically commercial, focusing strictly on business-to-business transactions. In Milan, the brands exhibit at the Studio Zeta Milano Showroom, with a special brand presentation at Palazzo Isimbardi on September 26, 2026. The showcase then moves to Paris at the prestigious Hôtel Marcel-Dassault from October 1 to 6, 2026. To secure shelf space in global luxury boutiques, organizers are hosting one-on-one sales consultations. This direct commercial approach leverages the global wave of interest in K-pop and Korean cinema, translating cultural curiosity into tangible international retail placements.

The Competitive Road to Paris Fashion Week

The Hanbok Collective project features an exciting competitive twist that onlookers should watch closely. While all five brands are showcasing their designs during the Milan leg, only two will be selected to advance to the follow-up showroom at Paris Fashion Week. This final selection will be determined based on commercial performance, buyer feedback, and market potential demonstrated during their time in Milan. While the ultimate retail success and the final two selected brands remain to be officially confirmed, this high-stakes selection process ensures that only the most market-ready Korean designs will make it to the Parisian stage.
