Korean actress Ha Young recently ignited a heated national debate after appearing on a variety show where she proudly shared her family history. She revealed that she comes from a fourth-generation medical family, starting with her great-grandfather, An Sang-ho, who studied Western medicine in Japan, established a medical practice in Seoul, and treated Emperor Gojong. What was intended as a lighthearted disclosure of a distinguished family background quickly turned into a major historical controversy as online users closely scrutinized her ancestor’s past during the Japanese colonial era.

Following the broadcast, netizens and researchers connected her great-grandfather to historical records from the Japanese colonial period. It was revealed that An Sang-ho served as a council member of the Daejeong Silence Friendship Association (Daejeong Chinmokhoe), a notorious pro-Japanese organization founded in 1916 that promoted harmony between Japan and Korea under imperial rule. Archives also resurfaced showing past interviews where he expressed sentiments aligning himself closely with Japanese culture, claiming he lived identically to a Japanese citizen.

The controversy intensified due to the management agency’s mishandling of the situation. Initially, Ha Young’s agency issued a strong denial, declaring all claims of pro-Japanese activities to be completely baseless. However, just a day later, as indisputable historical records emerged online, the agency retracted its statement, officially apologizing for its hasty denial and acknowledging that An Sang-ho’s name was indeed registered among the leadership of the pro-Japanese organization.
