Disney Highlights High Substance in Upcoming K-Drama The Remarried Empress
Disney Executive Praises The Remarried Empress at BIFF 2026
During the 31st Busan International Film Festival in October 2026, Jon Wax, Executive Vice President of International Original Television at Disney Entertainment, shared key insights regarding the upcoming K-drama The Remarried Empress. Speaking at a Creative Conversation panel hosted by the Motion Picture Association and Disney+, Wax highlighted that the series balances lavish visual grandeur with deep narrative substance. The highly anticipated show recently held a special three-episode preview screening at the festival, where tickets sold out almost instantly among eager global attendees.

From Popular Webtoon to Screen Adaptation
The series originates from a massive digital hit created by author Alphatart. Originally published as a Naver webtoon and web novel, the story accumulated nearly three billion global views before its television adaptation. For international viewers unfamiliar with Korean media terms, the show belongs to the romance fantasy genre, often abbreviated as rofan in Korea. This popular category blends royal court politics, high fantasy, and intense romantic drama. The story follows Empress Navier, who demands a divorce after her husband betrays her, only to strategically negotiate her right to remarry a rival prince.
A Star-Studded Cast Brings the Imperial Court to Life
Produced by Studio N and directed by Jo Soo-won, the production features an elite ensemble cast. Actress Shin Min-a stars as Empress Navier, portraying an intelligent ruler determined to protect her sovereign status. Ju Ji-hoon plays Emperor Sovieshu, her ex-husband who demands a divorce to enthrone his mistress. Lee Se-young joins as Rashta, the former runaway slave who triggers the court conflict, while Lee Jong-suk plays Prince Heinrey, a rival kingdom leader who forms a vital alliance with Navier. Writers Yeo Ji-na and Hyun Choong-yeol crafted the screenplays to translate the webtoon's royal intrigue to screen.

Disney Expands Asia-Pacific Strategy with Deep Storytelling
Disney Entertainment is leveraging high-budget local storytelling to expand its streaming presence across the Asia-Pacific region. As Jon Wax noted, while the series delivers traditional royal spectacle with opulent costuming and grand sets, it retains the emotional depth typical of top Korean dramas. The strategic investment reflects a broader push to bring original Korean intellectual property to global audiences. By combining established hit webtoon material with top-tier Korean talent and high production values, Disney aims to capture both core K-drama enthusiasts and mainstream international viewers.
Premiere Details and How to Watch
Global viewers will not have to wait long to experience the series. The Remarried Empress is scheduled to premiere worldwide on November 4, 2026. Streaming distribution will be handled globally by Disney+, with U.S. audiences able to stream the show on Hulu. The release will launch with a four-episode initial drop, allowing fans to dive immediately into the complex political and romantic drama of the Eastern Empire and Western Kingdom.
